Here at Truth and Consequences, I have met one of the most amazing WARRIORS that I have ever been given the opportunity to meet in my life. I hope after you read this article it inspires and lifts your heart to reach out, whether for your own personal reasons or if you have a family member or friend, someone you know may be struggling with abuse, past or present. ANY kind of abuse is horrible and needs to be dealt with in a timely manner.

The first Client of mine is from Jacksonville, Florida. Her name is Mary Wilkie. Mary was a young lady who was quite sheltered and grew up very confused. It seems that this would happen when your older siblings force you to have sexual oral relations with them. Absolutely disgusting behavior this is! It’s sad to think that your family, your “ride and dies”, would treat you with such disrespect and worthlessness. Sadly, Mary had to endure this at a very young age of 10 years old. When she came out in the open with her secret, no one would believe her, leaving her feeling helpless and receiving NO JUSTICE. This was the only childhood memory that Mary wanted to get off of her chest as it has made her hurt deep down inside her heart.

When we travel further down the timeline of Mary’s life, until about age 14, when her parents, married of 20 years, decided to get a divorce. Life moves on for the teen and she attends Terry Parker High School. Things were very difficult for this teenager and she had dropped out of school twice. Mary finally graduated in 2008, after she states,” It took a lot of hard work, dedication, and pushing myself.” After school, Mary enrolled at Penn Foster at the age of 18, pursuing a Bachelors in business. For personal reasons she decided not to pursue this opportunity last minute.

Mary Wilkie met Giacinto (Gino) Martin shortly after he moved to Jacksonville, Florida from New York.

GIACINTO MARTIN

Mary was working at Suncruz Casino, owned by Ocean Casino Cruises, also in Jacksonville, Florida. Things took off and everything seemed to be alright in the household. The couple welcomed two beautiful children into their lives. One day, about four days after one of the childrens birthday’s, the couple decided to get a babysitter so they could go out. Everyone knows if you have kids it is hard to have time for yourselves and take a break from parenting. This night the couple decided to goto the Nightclub.

Mary, knowing too well of the effects of alcohol, gave herself a two drink limit. This particular night, Giacinto ended up having 9 alcoholic beverages. They closed the bar at closing time and Mary and her lover went to leave, Mary being the designated driver. During the drive to their destination, Mary wanted to talk to Giacinto, and pulled over. This was a great time, the kids were not with them, so why not? As she started to explain her feelings to Gino, he bacame very angry and started going berserk.

Giacinto started beating his woman in her head. When you look at the photos, you can see both of Mary’s eyes are bruised from this beating. He then got out of the vehicle, walked around to the driver door, opened it and pulled Mary out of the car. He proceeded to bash her in the face yet again. With rage in his heart, he left her laying on the concrete, on the side of the road. Gino then backed up, like he was going to drive off and as he was leaving, revved up the engine and deliberately stepped on the gas, slamming into Mary. After being struck by the vehicle, Mary was trying to get up off of the ground and compose herself. She went to stand up and Giacinto ran her over with the vehicle, shattering her pelvis. When you’re in fight or flight mode your adrenaline kicks in, in order for your body to do what it needs to get to a safer place. A lot of the time, your brain is still very active, thinking clearly yet very, very fast, even through all the panic and commotion.

Valiant Mary tried again to sit up and the criminal ran over her again, trapping her hair under the deadly weapon he was using, the car tire. She’s fighting for her life, remember. She tries again to sit up, not realizing her hair was caught between the tire and the ground, and a big chunk ripped out of her head, now exposed to the outside air. In all of the chaos, she remembered she had watched a show that said when you “go limp” , it could save your life. This is exactly what Mary had done. Giacinto in his fit of rage, with the vehicle, drove over her shoulder in one last attempt to end her life. The man drove off.

By an act of the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, there was an angel nearby. Amongst all of the upheaval going on, the man was on his phone with 911. The angel, a man who is still to this day unidentified, stayed with Mary Wilkie until paramedics arrived. Mary said to this man that she was going to continue to talk to him. She was afraid that death was knocking on her door and she wasn’t ready to leave this planet. She felt as if she would die if she quit talking.

Once paramedics hoisted Mary up into the helicopter, she passed out. Waking up to the bright hospital lights from a coma after one month. Dr’s did not expect that for another five months to a year. I am going to say one thing, a Doctor can not tell you when you are going to die or when you are going to recover, as GOD is the only one that knows when it’s time to leave the Earth.

As soon as Mary could communicate to the authorites, she explained what happened on that frightful early morning. If the angel had not been there, Mary would have died on the side of the road, unable to tell her story, due to the devilish actions of Giacinto Martin. He was convicted of Premeditated Murder of the First Degree with a deadly weapon, the vehicle. He was sentenced to Life in Prison, without parole.

One statement that this amazing WARRIOR would like to share with readers is, “No matter what cards you are dealt here in life, when you feel you have no one to turn to, YOU ARE NEVER ALONE!” Mary also stated, “Learn to forgive yourself; Learn to take the greivence and deal with it.”

Mary was released from the hospital once she was healed enough to ‘deal with it’, wheelchair bound. She soon grew tired of the therapy appointments. She told the doctors she WOULD walk again but on her own terms. She was a strong individual who now had to heal her shattered pelvis, cervical and lumbar vertebrae in her spine, her hair had to grow back, she had road rash on her face along with the black eyes, and to top it off she had to learn how to walk all over again. It takes a strong courageous soul, to go through such tragedies, survive, and heal.

MARY ON THE WAY TO RECOVERY

Now Mary is living her life, trying to become independant again for herself and her kids. On her journey to standing without assistance and walking on her own, dealing with everyday tasks that we as people forget to be thankful for. She did something that not one person thought was possible. She taught herself how to walk again! It took this lady only TWO years to walk again. WOW! What a comeback.
